CRICKET EQUIPMENT
Cricket equipment consists of all the goods and
accessories that are required for the game of cricket. As cricket is
purely an outdoor game, a wide range of sport goods are required for the
game.
Types of Cricket Equipments
Cricket equipment can be categorized into the following categories:
Cricket
Bats: These are paddle shaped equipment that are used by the
batsman. The bat consists of a paded handle that is cylindrical in
shape provides an easy grip to the bat. Cricket bats are
traditionally made from willow wood, specifically from the
Cricket-bat Willow, treated with linseed oil. The handle is made of
selective cane and rubber.
- Cricket Balls: Cricket balls are usually constructed
from a core of cork, which is layered with tightly wound string and
covered by a leather case with a slightly
elevated
sewn seam. The covering of the ball is made of four pieces of
leather designed similar to the peel of a quartered orange. One of
the hemispheres is rotated by 90 degrees with respect to the other.
The center or equator of the ball is stitched with string to form
the seam, thus resulting in six rows of stitches in total. The
remaining two joins between the leather pieces are left unstitched.
Balls are of various types based on their construction and can be
chosen for the right application. Cricket balls are also available
in variety of colors.
- Cricket Stumps/Wickets:
They
are basically three vertical pillars or posts that support two
bails. Both stumps and bails are generally made of wood. Stumps and
bails together form a wicket at each end of the pitch. The overall
width of each wicket is 9 inches (22.9 cm). Each stump is 71.1 cm
tall with maximum and minimum diameters of 3.81 cm and 3.49 cm
respectively. Each stump have a pointed tip at one end for fixing
into the ground and the other end is circular with a groove that
holds the bails. Each stump is referred to by a specific name like
Off stump, middle stump and leg stump. The off stump is the stump on
the off side of the wicket, i.e. the same side as the batsman's bat;
the middle stump is the one in the middle of the wicket and leg
stump is the one on the leg side of the wicket, i.e. on the same
side as the batsman's legs.
- Batting Gloves: Batting gloves are typically meant for
protecting the fingers of the batsman. Gloves are made of fine
quality, durable and comfortable materials. Fine quality is the most
commonly used material for making gloves. Batting gloves have a
pre-curved finger design and are provided with cotton or sponge
padding for better protection to fingers.

Keeping Gloves: These gloves provide full finger protection to
wicket keepers. These gloves are usually constructed of soft leather

and knuckles. Two large nylon net are also inserted at the back for
ventilation. Wicket keeping gloves are available in adequate sized
catching pockets along with gathered webbing that prevents ball
slippage. These gloves are also made of leather.
- Elbow Guards: They are worn all around the elbow
providing extra protection to the elbows of the player. These are
padded structures that are made from light weight cross linked
polythelene moulded fit, soft absorbent cushioned back along with
elastic velcro straps.
Thigh
Pads: These are lightweight piece of protection, which are worn
on the outside of the thigh closest to the bowler. The pad consists
of two straps, one around the waist, and one around the inner thigh.
Thigh pads are usually made of polythylene moulded in linen casing
along with elastic velcro straps.
- Wicket Keeping & Batting Pads: These pads are also
meant for providing extra protection to the legs and knees of
batsman and wicket keepers. These are light weight pads, made of
high quality fabrics with soft spone padding.
